  Navigation Cadets Course ND – 100  
 

The on going Navigation Cadet Training Program consists of the following shore/on board training phases.

PHASE I     -           SHORE BASED TRAINING FOR FIVE MONTHS.

Training on basics of Seamanship, Operational Safety, Introduction to Navigation, Meteorology, Cargo Work, Ship Construction and Stability ,Watch keeping, Bridge Equipments, Communication, Mathematic ,Applied Science and Introduction to Computer Applications. They also follow Fire Prevention and Control, Elementary First Aid Personal Survival at Sea and Personal Safety and Social Responsibility courses.

PHASE II    -           SUPERVISED ON BOARD TRAINING FOR TWELVE MONTHS.

Cadets will be given a record book, which would have to be maintained by them indicating a continuous review of their performance.

PHASE III  -           SHORE BASED TRAINING FOR THREE MONTHS. 

Cadets will be given an in-depth study in Seamanship, Navigation, Meteorology, Ship Construction, Stability, Watch keeping ,Bridge Equipments, Mathematics, applied Science etc. They will have to follow the Radar Observation and Plotting and Proficiency in Survival Craft courses at this stage.

PHASE IV  -           SUPERVISED TRAINING ON BOARD FOR TWELVE MONTHS.

Cadets may be appointed on vessels as 4th Officers who will be assistant to Watch Keeping Officers. They will continue to maintain their record book.

PHASE V    -           SHORE BASED TRAINING FOR SIX MONTHS.

Cadets will be given an in-depth study in Seamanship, Navigation, Meteorology, Ship Construction, Stability, Watch keeping ,Bridge Equipments, Mathematics, Applied Science etc.

They also follow the Advanced Fire Prevention and Control, Proficiency in Medical First Aid, ARPA, Radar Simulator, Electronic Navigation System and GMDSS courses.

After Phase V, the Cadets will be ready to sit for an examination for the Certificate of Competency as Officer in charge of a Navigational Watch on ships of 500 GT or more, conducted by the Ministry of Ports and Shipping, of the Government of Sri Lanka.             

After the relevant sea time, Officers can follow shore-based courses for the preparation of Chief Mate and Master on ships of 500 GT or more examinations which will also be conducted by the Ministry of Ports and Shipping.

Scope

This course covers the mandatory minimum requirements as set out in Table A II/1 of STCW `95. It is based on the minimum knowledge required for certification of officers-in-charge of a navigational watch on ships of 500 GT or more.

  The course consists of 5 phases as detailed below

·      Phase 1    -               Pre Sea Training                  Duration 05 months                 

·      Phase 11  -               Onboard Training               Duration 12 months

·      Phase 111            -               Shore Based Training          Duration 03 months

·      Phase 1V -               Onboard Training               Duration 12 months

·      Phase V   -               Shore Based Training          Duration 06 months



ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

The Deck Cadets are selected on the following basic qualifications, although almost all of them are of a much higher standard.

1.                  They are of an age below 21 years.

2.                  Have successfully completed the General Certificate of Education (GCE) Ordinary Level Examination, with a minimum of five Credit passes including Mathematics, Science and English Language.

3.                  Have a minimum of 3 passes in the Science Stream at GCE Advanced Level  Examination out of following subject physics, Chemistry, Combined Mathematics and Biology

Or

         Pass Combined MATHEMATICS AND Physics in GCE (A/L) Examination

                                                         Or

         Successful completion of an approved Foundation Course

4.                  Are of sound physical and mental state. Preference is given to those with extra curricular-sports activities and whose parents or close relatives have made a career out at sea.

5.                  They are processed through an aptitude test conducted by CINEC.

6.                  The candidate should pass a medical fitness test and the Sight Test (6/6 visions in both eyes and colour test) to the satisfaction of the administration of the college.

7.                  The candidate should pass a psychometric test to the satisfaction of the administration of the college.

8.                  They are chosen finally through two interviews conducted by Master Mariners and representatives of shipping companies.

                              24 months training on board ships
