The Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is the most inclusive intergovernmental platform in the Asia-Pacific region. The Commission promotes cooperation among its 53 member States and 9 associate members in pursuit of solutions to sustainable development challenges. ESCAP is one of the five regional commissions of the United Nations.

The ESCAP secretariat supports inclusive, resilient and sustainable development in the region by generating action-oriented knowledge, and by providing technical assistance and capacity-building services in support of national development objectives, regional agreements and the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. ESCAP also provides support to partners at the national level.

ESCAP is taking steps to mainstream gender in all its activities, to ensure that gender equality is addressed holistically in order to develop forward-looking strategies and contribute to efforts towards gender equality, poverty reduction and economic growth in support of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Against this background, ESCAP undertook a study project aimed to assess both opportunities and challenges of women workforce, including the transport and logistics sector; analyze initiatives and national policies; drawing good practices and national experiences to mainstream gender issues and promote gender inclusiveness in employment.

Chair Professor Lalith Edirisinghe, Dean of the Faculty of Management and Social Sciences of CINEC Campus, Sri Lanka is an Expert Consultant of the United Nations Secretariat and recently conducted a series of research on Women participation and the concerning areas of Peoples with Disabilities in logistics and transport sector.   These studies are inline with UN 2023 agenda focusing on “No one is left behind”
